Today show host left viewers cringing yet again when he asked one of `s top cops for a `police escort` at the border.

The Channel Nine presenter, 47, showed off his cheeky side while interviewing Deputy Commissioner Steve Gollschewski on Monday.

`I will be coming through with a cavalcade [once the border to opens].































Any chance, any likelihood at all of some kind of, you know, police escort?` Karl asked.

His co-host Allison Langdon joked that he should be getting `searched` by the police at the Queensland-NSW border.

Mr Gollschewski smiled at the joke but told Karl he wouldn`t be getting any special treatment when he enters the state.

`I`m not sure about the cavalcade, Karl,` he said.

`You might have to tone that down a bit, but we`ll see,` he added, clearly joking.

`Okay, that`s a big no,` Karl laughed. 

Allison suggested her co-host had invited extra scrutiny when he does eventually try to cross the border to reunite with his family in Queensland.

Letting him down gently: `I`m not sure about the cavalcade Karl,` Steve replied, smiling. `You might have to tone that down a bit but we`ll see,` he added, clearly joking

`Yeah, I`d be flagging that one down and pulling it over,` she said. 

Karl was raised in Brisbane and most of his family lives in the Sunshine State. 

His wife, shoe designer Jasmine Stefanovic, also hails from Brisbane and they regularly go there for holidays.

The state is set to open its border on December 17. 

But details still appear sketchy as to what that will look like for those who need to cross the border on a regular basis.

An estimated 40,000 cars a day will cross the border when it reopens.   

`Our aim to get people across as quickly and effectively as possible while balancing that to people the community safe,` Mr Gollschewski said.
